For the paranoid, going completely cashless is a terrifying prospect. It means the government will be able to monitor everything you buy and a significant portion of what you do. If and when a government decides to go cashless, the paranoid of the world will likely keel over and die, leave the planet or spend the rest of their lives in, well … paranoia, and misery.
But, as it turns out, the paranoid and the rest of the world don’t have to worry about governments deciding to go cashless. There’s no need for governments to do that because it’s going to happen all by itself. In fact, it’s already well underway.
Much of what we do all day is already cashless. Debit cards and smart phones/tablets/watches already handle the majority of our daily transactions – from buying coffee and paying tolls on the way to work to paying bills and subscriptions online. The remaining minority of tasks will likely fall victim to e-payments long before then end of the next decade. Hell, Trump has already ordered that the penny de discontinued.
In the coming years, the only people you’ll probably hear insisting on being able to use cash will be criminals with much to hide … and those who the government has actually spied on. Then again, we hear crypto is fairly anonymous. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
